Call for papers – Special Session at VPPC 2026 (Lyon, France)

Abstract: The rapid deployment of electrified transportation and energy storage systems is a cornerstone of the transition toward low-carbon mobility and renewable energy integration. While major technological advances have been achieved in batteries, fuel cells, power electronics, electric drives, charging infrastructure, and hydrogen systems, their true sustainability performance can only be assessed through a comprehensive life cycle perspective. This special session focuses on the application and improvement of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), and combined Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) frameworks to evaluate the environmental, social, and economic impacts of transportation and energy storage systems. Particular attention will be given to electrified systems (e.g., electric vehicles, batteries, charging infrastructure, and powertrain electrification), including realistic modeling of use-phase conditions, ageing phenomena, second-life applications, eco-design strategies, modularity, and sustainability-driven decision support.

Contributions are invited on, but not limited to:
• LCA, LCC and S-LCA of batteries, fuel cells, power electronics, electric machines, and energy storage systems
• Well-to-wheels and cradle-to-grave assessment of electrified transportation systems across land, rail, sea, and air
• Environmental impacts of charging systems, smart grids, shore-to-ship power supply, airport electrification, and hydrogen infrastructures
• LCC and total cost of ownership of vehicles and transportation infrastructures across land, sea, air, and rail sectors
• Integrated LCA–S-LCA–LCC (LCSA) frameworks for transportation and energy storage systems
• Life cycle–informed modeling, simulation, control, and energy management strategies for multimodal transportation systems
• Sustainability-driven decision support and policy assessment
• Realistic modeling of use and end-of-life phases in LCA, including integration of ageing phenomena
• Parametric life cycle inventory (LCI) modeling
• Environmental and socio-economic impacts of second-life batteries
• Sustainability implications of modularity and eco-design approaches
