Research
The PT-ERC group contributes to international research and technology transfer in the fields of both Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) and Gas Turbines (GT).
The main research fields are:
- Technologies and fuels for carbon footprint and emission reduction in Heavy-Duty and Light-Duty vehicles based on internal combustion engines (ICE)
- New combustion systems (HCCI/partially premixed combustion).
- Alternative fuels (CNG, H2/CNG, LPG, biofuels).
- Advanced charging systems (turbocharging; variable valve actuation; …).
- Advanced injection systems (CNG and gasoline direct injection; high-pressure injection systems for diesel ICEs).
- Modeling and diagnostic tools for combustion in multicylinder ICEs.
- Feed forward approach for combustion control.
- Aftertreatment systems.
- Thermal hybrid powertrains for road transport
- Energy efficient management of on-board electric and thermal systems.
- Strategies for the reduction of ICE emission and combustion noise.
- Advanced technologies for high-efficient thermal engines (turbocharging, injection, EGR system, aftertreatment).
- Turbomachinery analysis and design for power generation and propulsion
- Numerical simulation of unsteady component interaction in turbomachinery (combustor/turbine, stator/rotor, fluid/structure)
- Numerical simulation of reactive flows in gas turbine combustors (premixed/non-premixed flames, CNG, hydrogen, methane, bio-fuels)
- Numerical optimization of gas turbine components (transition piece, high-pressure vane, cooling hole geometry)
- Analysis and design of components for next-gen gas turbines equipped with pressure-gain combustors
- Numerical simulation of turbine cooling configurations (film cooling, platform cooling, internal cooling)
- Numerical simulation of secondary air systems in turbomachinery (cavity flows, leakage flows)
